Managing Your Fundraising Career in Stormy Ethical Times

With corporate fraud and scandal at the forefront of the news, the need for nonprofit organizations to embrace high ethical standards is of critical importance.  More than half of nonprofit executives say they have observed unethical fund-raising behavior, a new survey has found. The most common concern raised by executives: use of percentage-based compensation to pay fund raisers.  Fundraising professionals face increased pressure to raise more funds.  How do you balance the challenges of advancing your career with the ideals set forth in the AFP Code of Ethical Principles and Standards?  We will examine these and other pertinent issues in Managing Your Fundraising Career in Stormy Ethical Times.

James R. Holcomb is founder and president of Holcomb and Associates, specializing in working with nonprofits interested in creating or improving planned giving programs. Holcomb also provides comprehensive management consultation in establishing or improving existing development programs, and evaluating and improving management and operations.

For over five decades, James has worked in the nonprofit sector.  His previous experience includes seven years with Southwestern Baptist Theological Seminary where he directed a $25 million capital campaign for construction, renovation and endowment, and more than 20 years with the Radio and Television Commission of the Southern Baptist Convention. Prior to establishing his own consulting firm, he was president of the Community Foundation of North Texas.

He is past president of the Fort Worth Metro Chapter of the Association of Fundraising Professionals (AFP), is a graduate of the Southwest Institute of Fund Raising, and retired as a Certified Fund Raising Executive (CFRE).  He is a founding member of the Alliance of Nonprofit Counsel
