The Red Feather Society - A New Spirit of Commitment to our Community

The Red Feather Society represents a thoughtful level of community participation, an indication of deeper involvement and a desire to do more. The Society is made up of those donors who by choice or ability are able to take on a true leadership role in the community and help build the future.

The Red Feather Society is the link between generosity and our community’s needs. Such leadership gives United Way of Tyler/Smith County the strength, character, purpose and longevity that distinguishes it from all others.

An Invitation to Join the New Spirit of Leadership
You can become a member of this special group of individuals through payroll deduction at your company or a direct contribution or pledge to the United Way of Tyler/Smith County. If your spouse contributes through another company, you may combine your pledges to meet the minimum gift level of $1,000.00

Giving Levels:

  • White Feather $1,000 - 1,499
  • Red Feather     $1,500 - 2,499
  • Silver Feather  $2,500 - 4,999
  • Gold Feather    $5,000 - 9,999
  • The Alexis de Tocqueville Society   $10,000 +

The Alexis de Tocqueville Society was established to recognize personal contributions of $10,000 and above. The Society, established nationally by United Way of America, is named after the esteemed author of Democracy in America. During his travels in America, beginning in 1831, Tocqueville observed the extraordinary initiative taken by Americans to help each other in times of need. He wrote, “when an American asks for the co-operation of his fellow citizens, it is seldom refused, and I have often seen it afforded spontaneously and with great good will.”

Donors who give at any of the Leadership levels are honored each year at a reception hosted by one of the Leadership members. Leadership givers are also listed in a Leadership booklet printed annually.

The Leadership Society has grown from 100 members in the early years, to over 400 during the last campaign period. Leadership donors know they are perpetuating ideals upon which the United Way was founded, and gain satisfaction from knowing their contribution helps in the search for positive solutions to problems right here in our community.
